Our Story

The Journey of No Gas Here

2013- Safeway submitted an application for the 16 pump gas station.
Adriann creates website and facebook page “Oppose the Proposed Petaluma Safeway Gas Station”

July 25, 2014- Albertson's bought Safeway.  Those in the neighborhood that were aware of it thought it was over.

August 28, 2017- Amazon bought Whole Foods.  Safeway decided they needed to get back into selling gas to compete.

May 8, 2018- The Planning Commission addresses the Safeway Gas Station project.  This is the first I've heard about it in years from the city.  There is a huge showing of public outrage.  The Planning Commission sites a lack of public outreach on Safeway's part and delays a decision until June 26th, giving Safeway time to do outreach.

June 26, 2018- The Planning Commission again reviews the Safeway Gas Station.  After Safeway threatened the City with a law suit for delay, it's a long night of passionate comments from the public.  The Planning Commission approves the Project, with some members of the commissions only reseason for approval was to avoid the City being sued.

July 2018- A group of neighbors Appeal the approval to the City Council. We met through the Planning Commission meetings, Next Door, and funny enough, one of the Safeway Openhouses.
Summer 2018- Urban Chat Meeting.  The name “No Gas Here” is coined.

September 17, 2018- The City Council opts to delay hearing the Appeal at the Meeting that night.  Too much information has come in from the lawyer & environmental consultant representing No Gas Here.  Lots of enthusiastic supporters in attendance were heartwarming to see.

October 15, 2018- Our Appeal is again delayed from the agenda of another City Council Meeting.

December 3, 2018- The new date of the latest City Council Meeting to review the Appeal.
